This week I will look at the two largest chicken franchises in Australia. KFC and Nando's have become the dominant forces in the fast food chicken sector by offering two very different products. KFC as you all should know is short for Kentucky Fried Chicken, and as the name suggests it is American styled fried chicken. Nando's on the other hand is portugese styled grilled chicken. Due to their different styles the experience of eating their respective foods is very different, yet because they occupy the same market this comparison is necessary.
KFC began in USA during the 1950's, and opened its first franchise in Australia during 1968. KFC outlets are very similar to other American brands like Mcdonald's and Hungry Jacks/Burger King. They offer a typical fast food experience where you can order your food in store to eat in or takeaway, or you can pick up a take away meal via a drive through window so you do not have to leave your vehicle.
In terms of KFC's menu they offer meals for one person, where you can buy pieces of chicken, chicken burgers or wraps. These can come with a variety of side dishes including chips, potato and gravy as well as coleslaw. A particular highlight that must be mentioned is the return of the tower burger, a burger that combines a fried chicken fillet with a hashbrown. For a single person meal at KFC you can expect to pay anywhere between $6 and $10. You can also order family meals from KFC, and they even have a 30 piece bucket you can order, filled with 30 pieces of chicken of your choice. The 30 piece bucket is definitely intended for those who like to party!!
Nando's began in South Africa in the late 1980's, and first opened in Australia in 1990. Prior to Nando's most fast food chicken franchises in Australia tried to imitate KFC, for example Red Rooster. This tactic failed as most consumers did not want to buy an imitation: why buy something that cost the same and is less widely available. Nandos' was the first in Australia to offer a different style to KFC's. Their portugese style chicken taste less fatty, and in burger or wrap form they offer more fresh salad than KFC, who tend to only put a piece of lettuce on their burgers to compliment the meat filling. Nando's have even inspired an imitation chain in the form Oporto, which it must be said is a poor imitation.
While Nando's are present in some food courts, their outlets tend to be halfway between a restaurant and a normal fast food outlet. When you order to eat in at Nando's you can go sit down at a table and the food is brought to you on a plate, as opposed to on a plastic tray in wrappers at KFC. At some Nando's restaurants you can order alcoholic beverages including beer and wine.
Nando's menu offers similar packages for single orders as KFC do. You can order a variety of burgers and wraps from Nando's with a side of chips. Like stated earlier, Nando's chicken taste less greasy due to being grilled and their burgers and wraps offer more salad fillings than KFC, giving Nando's a fresher taste. You can even order burgers in portugese bread. However these extra's do come at a cost. The minimum for a Nando's meal consisting of chicken pieces/burger/wrap and chips and drink costs at least $11.45. In some places like the ACT the drink is not included in the meal. At KFC you can get a burger plus a piece of chicken, regular chips, potato and gravy and a soft drink for under $10. Nando's also offer a variety of family meals, however these are less extensive than KFC's and basically are only a whole chicken with some side dishes.
The highlight of Nando's menu has to be the sauces. Nando's baste their chicken in their peri peri sauce, which come in a variety of different levels of heat. Furthermore when you eat in you can take a bottle of tomato or peri peri sauces back to the table and spread it over your chips. The peri peri really add's individuality to the taste of Nando's.
So both have different angles on fast food chicken, but which one is better fast food chicken?
As stated before Nando's outlet are almost restaurant like in terms of presentation and cost. This is very untypical for a fast food outlet, and it really works against Nando's. If I wanted to eat at a restaurant I would. As it stands though Nando's cost more for a food which is nice but still borderline fast food. Furthermore there is no convenience option with Nando's, yes you can order takeaway but you have to wait the same length of time as those eating in do. There is no drive through option. As a fast food outlet it fails to meet basic expectations, yet if you compared it to a restaurant it still feels like a fast food outlet, despite the plates and the food being delivered to the table. Nando's redeeming factor is the amazing peri peri sauce, if Nando's did not have this I would not eat there.
KFC is hardly a nutritious meal, it taste obviously unhealthy. But that is the point of fast food, it is a guilty pleasure. You do not eat fast food when you are after a nice meal. You eat fast food after waking up from a night that you drank you body weight in alcohol and you cannot remember a thing. You probably vomited that night, and unless you did it on you're own clothes you have no way being sure. All you know is that your stomach is empty, and it needs filling instantly. You can drive to KFC and just swing through the drive through and order a feast for under $10, and go back to your house where the curtains are drawn to block out that evil natural light and pig out. You knows its bad for you, but you do not care. It taste good and cheap. This is the point of fast food. This is why KFC wins.
Next week will be Slayer vs Pantera vs Metallica

i whole heartedly agree with this debate. it is definately one of lifes greatest wonders... I myself had the decision of whether to go for kfc or nandos only yesterday. as i was hungover i decided to go for kfc. i even went for the childhood favourite, chicken nuggets. i might say that they were a bit dv. however, they came with sweet and sour sauce which not only complemented the nuggets, but the fries also. washed down with a mountain dew it was a good hangover cure. but had my hangover been less severe, nandos would have also done the trick and made me feel a little less fatty fatty fat fat...
ReplyDeletewell written blog. i look forward to next weeks... although we all know who wins out there.
What a load of dribel. KFC is better because it is cheaper, nastier and worse for you?! If this is the criteria why not just get oporto? Plus KFC is not always quick to get - and nando's does not take that long. Also, if you wanted to get chicken you would go to a restaurant? How many restaurants do you go to they serve portuguese style chicken. KFC offer up greasy crap, while nando's offers a healthier, tastier and different alternative. You're obvious alcohol problem, coupled with the fact your hatred of the sun must mean your an albino or something, clearly clouds your judgement in this debate. Phil Collins 4 eva!!
ReplyDeleteWalter Lucky go drink some Pepsi Max. If I saw you walking down the street I'd be sure to launch an awesome piece of KFC at your head!! Keep up the good work Sledgehammer!!
ReplyDeleteWell in terms of fast food greasy and cheap are good, If you eat fast food to be healthy you are missing the point. Last time I checked KFC drive through is a hell of alot quicker than waiting for a Nando's meal. And if they are not busy instore they can usually pack the food for you straight away. The only wait is usually lining up. If you actually read Nando's menu they tell you to be patient while waiting for your food after you have ordered.
ReplyDeleteAlso Walter the cost of a Nando's meal is not far off the cost of your beloved Vindaloo at Bollywood Masala, what would you choose between those two?
By the way there no a hatred of the sun or an alcohol problem on my end, it is just a love of partying. Being a phill collins fan I do not think you understand this concept...
"Perhaps the money you saved buying KFC could be spent paying me for the time I wasted reading that pathetic diatribe. Cook your own F'n chicken you fat F*ck"
ReplyDeleteMagic Johnson beat HIV by getting fat. Perhaps by getting fat you can cure your Aids to?
The point of fast food is to eat something tasty, which you dont have to cook yourself, within a reasonable timeframe. it seems as though the only thing you care about is how quick and cheap something is. In your case a McDonalds McChicken meal wins because it's quicker and cheaper than anything else. Perhaps reheating some chicken in the microwave or something as suggested by someone above is the best option for you. Just because nando's have a sign saying being patient does not mean KFC is much quicker, lines are often longer at KFC (more drunken morons most likely) and the KFC drive through does not take eftpos, a major inconveniece. Nando's is roughly about $11-14, Bollywood is about $20, that's 40-60% more - how are they about the same in price? My advice sledgehammer - stay in your dark room & pray KFC start up a delivery service
ReplyDelete"Magic Johnson beat HIV by getting fat. Perhaps by getting fat you can cure your Aids to?"
ReplyDeleteNice deflection, although your use of obscure sports triva serves only to confirm my original suspicion that you really are a fatty fatty in need of some serious exercise.
1. For a vindaloo at Bollywood Masala it is $13.90, plus $2 for rice. That is not 40-60% higher in cost than Nando's.
ReplyDelete2. I was referring to KFC as hangover food. Yiro's are drunk food. Also KFC closes at 10:30 at night as you may be aware of, probably a bit too early for a drunken meal?
3. Mcdonald's is not a part of this comparison because I was comparing the two most prominent fast food CHICKEN franchises. KFC understands the market they are in and delivers a service appropriately in line with the expectations, which is quick and cheap food which despite being unhealthy taste good. Nando's does taste great and is a nicer environment to eat at. But if you just want a quick takeaway meal it does take longer due to the length of prep time, and that there is no drive through. They are clearly half way between fast food and a restaurant, but really do not meet all the criteria of either. Which is shame, Nando's food is really good.
"Nice deflection, although your use of obscure sports triva serves only to confirm my original suspicion that you really are a fatty fatty in need of some serious exercise."
ReplyDeleteYou seem to have a negative view of fat people. It is a pretty shallow way to look at the world. I admire alot of fat people. Think about it, Charles Barkley, Darren Lehman, Wesley Willis are all amazing and fat. I only wish I was as fat as them. I can only dream...
what about naan bread ? 13.90 + 2 + 3.50 = 19.4 ( & since when was rice $2, i don't just have that plain stuff)
ReplyDeleteI brought up McDonaalds because it seemed that was what you were really comparing, which is the better fast food, not which is better.
Basically you like fast food over non fast food.
But one thing KFC does have over Nando's is the tower burger, and the fact it is easier to throw at people, which I'm sure will be tested on Wednesday
I was talking about the cost of a standard meal, which comprises of main (for Nando's chicken pieces/burger/wrap, for Bollywood Masala vindaloo) and standard side (for nandos chips, for bollywood rice). If you want to upgrade or get extra's you can do so at both, like order naan bread at Bollywood or in Nando's case corn on the cob. You have got to compare equivalents, I compared the costs of the equivalent standard meal of Bollywood and Nando's and the cost difference was not great. If you want to include extras into the costs of one do so for both.
ReplyDeleteYou seem to miss the point of what this comparison is looking at. I am looking at how these two meet the needs of their overall market, which is fast food chicken. This involves looking at a variety of factors including food quality and taste, how they meet the service requirements of their market and their value. If I was just looking at which food I like best the story may be different, both are different styles and both taste great. Neither are my favourite, Ethipion wins clearly here. At the end of the day Nando's is good food, but it does not meet the needs of the fast food chicken sector as well as KFC
"I only wish I was as fat as them. I can only dream..."
ReplyDeleteThose people that you mention might well have been amazing. Though, something tells me it was not because they were fat, but rather, because they did something meaningful with the time they weren't eating like a fatty fatty. Their contribution to society was not measured by the number of chicken wings they consumed, but by the joy they brought to their many fans.
So, perhaps instead of wishing to be as fat as them you might actually seek to do something as meaniful and worthwhile as them. And for the record, writing this blog is not one of them.
"So, perhaps instead of wishing to be as fat as them you might actually seek to do something as meaniful and worthwhile as them. And for the record, writing this blog is not one of them."
ReplyDeleteI am under no impression that this blog is meaningful what so ever. Its just a random opinion of mine. I am not so pretentious to set out and do stuff that will be considered grand and meaningful, I do thing's because I want to do them, no more to it than that. Whether others like it and agree or not is irrelevant as far as I care.
KFC drive-thru does not offer the option to pay by card, which, in this modern day society, is a sign they are behind the times. it is incorrect to penalise Nando on the basis of no drive-thru when KFC offers a severly limited service through this 'convenient' collection method.
ReplyDeleteI have paid via Eftpos at KFC before everytime I have needed to do so. Usually have paid cash. So in my experience it is not a severely limited service. Thus it is valid to mark down Nando's for not having this option. Fast food joint or restaurant, what is Nando's trying to achieve?
ReplyDeletego to hell. vegan power.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe in hell. However if there is one I will most certainly end up there...
ReplyDeleteDon't listen to these CHUMPS Sledge....I hear ya!
ReplyDeleteInteresting debate, Sledge, Walter. I know it has been a while, but when you compare things you have to consider all aspects of the equation and only then can you come up with a definite conclusion to the whole thing.
ReplyDelete"What are Nandos trying to achieve?" you asked that Sledge. Deliver the Portuguese style chicken they prep to the world, which they are. And in my understanding, all the disapproving points you mentioned have been tended to. Keep this debate in mind and visit again, you'll see, smell and taste what I mean. Sending this from South Africa and pretty sure that even with the Australian economy were it is compared to S.A, Nandos S.A kicks the secret recipe out of an Australian KFC
kfc or nandos.
ReplyDeletekfc £30 will feed 5 for the day
nandos £30 wont even fill up 2
both taste banging
Havnt read all the comments but has anyone mentioned that KFC is not REAL chicken? Nando's every time for me
